Popular patio projects
- Extending a small builder slab behind the house.
- A new patio for a grill, outdoor kitchen or fire pit.
- A slab sized for a future screen room or pergola.
- A walkway that links the patio to the driveway or side yard.
Plan it before the pour
- Size. Lay out the furniture you want with a garden hose or stakes before you call. It makes the quote faster.
- Drainage. A patio should slope gently away from the house. In heavy summer rain, a flat or back-sloped patio sends water toward your doors.
- Future screen room. If you may enclose it later, tell the contractor. Screen rooms and pool cages often need a thicker edge or footing, and some need a permit and engineering.
- Finish. Broom finish is economical and slip resistant. Stamped, stained or exposed aggregate finishes look like stone or brick for more money.
- Heat. Lighter colors and textured finishes stay cooler underfoot in the Florida sun.
Concrete or pavers?
Both work well in Ocala. Concrete is one smooth surface with fewer weeds and ants coming up through joints; pavers are easier to patch and lift. See concrete vs pavers in Florida for a fair comparison.
Cost
Plain broom-finish patios generally cost less per square foot than decorative finishes. Small patios can cost more per square foot because setup is the same. See our cost guide for rough estimates.
Protect yourself
Ask any contractor for proof of general liability and workers' compensation insurance, a written quote that lists thickness, square footage, finish and what is included, and who pulls any permit. Check the contractor's license status on the Florida DBPR site or with Marion County. Don't pay the full price before the work is done.

Questions people ask
Do I need a permit for a patio?
A simple slab on grade often doesn't, but covered patios, screen rooms and some locations may. Confirm with Marion County or the City of Ocala, and ask your contractor.
How thick should a patio be?
Many residential patios are about 4 inches. Areas that will hold a hot tub, screen room or heavy kitchen may need more. Ask your contractor.
Can you add on to my existing patio?
Often, yes. Contractors usually dowel into the old slab or use an expansion joint. The colors may not match exactly.

Ocala Concrete Driveways is a free referral service. We do not perform concrete work and do not hold a contractor license. Calls and requests are passed to independent, local concrete contractors who set their own prices, do the work, and are solely responsible for it. Always ask any contractor for proof of license and insurance and a written quote before work starts.
