Repair or replace?
Small hairline cracks and a single sunken section can often be repaired. Replacement usually makes more sense when:
- Cracks run across most of the slab or pieces have broken loose.
- Large areas have sunk and water now pools or runs toward the garage.
- Tree roots have lifted the slab in several places.
- The surface is badly scaled or crumbling.
- You're switching from asphalt, shell or gravel to concrete.
If you're unsure, see concrete repair and ask the contractor to explain both options.
How replacement usually goes
- Quote. The contractor measures, checks the slope and looks for roots, drainage problems and the condition of the base.
- Tear-out and haul-off. Old concrete or asphalt is broken up and hauled away. Ask whether disposal is in the price.
- Base repair. Soft spots are dug out, roots dealt with, and sand re-compacted. Skipping this step is a common reason new driveways fail early.
- Forms, pour and finish. Usually done in a day for a typical home, weather permitting.
- Cure. Stay off it as long as your contractor says.
Trees and roots
Oaks are common in Ocala yards, and their roots often cause the damage. Cutting large roots can harm or destabilize a tree, so talk to your contractor, and an arborist if needed, before roots are removed. A root barrier or a slightly reshaped driveway can sometimes help.
The street apron
The part of the driveway between the sidewalk or property line and the road is often in the public right-of-way. Replacing it may need a permit from Marion County or the City of Ocala. See our permit article.
Protect yourself
Ask any contractor for proof of general liability and workers' compensation insurance, a written quote that lists thickness, square footage, finish and what is included, and who pulls any permit. Check the contractor's license status on the Florida DBPR site or with Marion County. Don't pay the full price before the work is done.

Questions people ask
Can new concrete be poured over the old driveway?
Sometimes an overlay is possible on a sound slab, but on a broken or sunken driveway most contractors recommend tear-out and a new base.
Is haul-off included?
Not always. Ask whether demolition, disposal and base repair are included in the quote.
What does replacement cost?
It depends on size, demolition and finish. Our cost guide gives rough estimate ranges; only an on-site quote is a real price.
